2007 FIRST

Since 2006 (the year before I entered high school), my school has participated in the US FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). 2007 was the first year I personally participated (seeing as it was my first year of high school). It was a learning year for me, so I was not able to contribute much.

In contrast, 2008 was a much more successful year. By the end of the seeding rounds, we weren't in the top 8, but we were selected to be on the alliance of one of the teams that was, to be in the elimination rounds. We made it all the way to the finals (someone, probably our teacher adviser, took a picture of the brackets to show we did), where our alliance lost one roung, won the next, and lost the last, giving the other team the best 2 of 3. But that still gave our alliance 2nd place. In addition, for working on the robot's electrical system, I won the team's MVP award. So a good year was had for all.

Our robot worked well enough, except our mechanism to shoot balls never quite worked right. (There was just never enough power in the motor, and we couldn't use a larger motor due to the rules.) We were middle-of-the-pack the whole time, and weren't selected for the elimination rounds. I worked on the electrical system again, and got to deal with the change over to several new components from the previous years' standard.
